Den stora politiska gåtan

Dessa bolag har rapporterat till sina återförsäkringsbolag betydligt fler naturkatastrofer förra året än tidigare. Den värsta av dem, jordbävningen i Haiti hade ingenting med vädret att göra, men en rad andra hade det - översvämningarna i Pakistan och Australien och bränderna i Ryssland, för att ta några exempel.

Ingen är förvånad. Men den stora politiska gåtan är utan tvekan denna: Varför bryter det inte ut en omvälvande klimatdebatt? Runt 2007 och en bit in på 2008 formligen dånade denna fråga i offentligheten och även bland gemene man. Nu är det närapå dödstyst. Fortfarande är det så att vårt samhälles heligaste ord är tillväxt, i den simplaste av alla meningar: Ökande BNP, även i de allra rikaste länderna. Ändå tyder allting på att den industrikapitalistiska civilisationen visar oss vägen mot en allt febrigare planet.

Hur kan det vara så tyst om klimatfrågan? Hur är det möjligt att politiker utan minsta eftertanke eller komplikation av begreppet kan ropa efter mer tillväxt?
